In non-commercial environments, this would be an idea that creates value because it got implemented. In commercial environments, it would be the introduction of something new to the market, or if you will, an invention that is commercialized.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">innovation<\/a> &mdash; is on the verge of becoming a buzzword that is used for everything. It therefore makes sense to distinguish the commonly used related terms and consider their subtleties. Ecosystems emerge on different levels. There can be national innovation ecosystems; sector and regional innovation ecosystems, focal company innovation ecosystems; product-service or technology innovation ecosystems; and many more <span class=\"zp-InText-zp-ID--2420821-FSDJIWNA-_-2420821-JB4PYZXK--wp814 zp-InText-Citation loading\" rel=\"{ 'pages': 'np', 'items': '{2420821:FSDJIWNA},{2420821:JB4PYZXK}', 'format': '(%a%, %d%, %p%)', 'brackets': '', 'etal': '', 'separator': '', 'and': '' }\"><\/span>. These are the most commonly differentiated levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ecosystem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A community of hierarchically independent yet interdependent heterogeneous participants who collectively generate an ecosystem output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovation Ecosystem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A collection of players and processes that co-evolve through their symbiotic interactions (both cooperative and competitive): <em>&ldquo;An <a href=\"https:\/\/codify.in\/de\/glossary\/innovation-ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"This term is often used synonymously for &lsquo;innovation system&rsquo; and can mean many different things at different levels. For more information, refer to the levels of an &lsquo;ecosystem&rsquo;.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">innovation ecosystem<\/a> consists of a group of interdependent players and processes who together, through their interactions, make innovation happen. This innovation changes the products and services that are produced by the ecosystem. Over time the innovation ecosystem as a whole evolves, as do its players and processes [&hellip;] <\/em><span class=\"zp-InText-zp-ID--2420821-FSDJIWNA--wp814 zp-InText-Citation loading\" rel=\"{ 'pages': '62', 'items': '{2420821:FSDJIWNA}', 'format': '(%a%, %d%, %p%)', 'brackets': '', 'etal': '', 'separator': '', 'and': '' }\"><\/span>.&rdquo; We often also just say &lsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/codify.in\/de\/glossary\/innovation-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"An innovation system, as understood at a company-level, designates the infrastructures for finding, developing, evaluating, and implementing new ideas and business models within an organization. It is the organization&rsquo;s &lsquo;operating system&rsquo; for innovation.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">innovation system<\/a>&rsquo; if we mean this level, as we assume that these days all innovation should be driven by open innovation and co-opetition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Business Examples: Pearson, Intuit, Bosch, Apple and their customers, partners, and suppliers;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term innovation ecosystem itself is also used at different levels: e.g. at an organizational level, industry level, or even a national level, forming &lsquo;national systems of innovation&rsquo;, which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Freeman\">Christopher Freeman<\/a> (who coined the term) described as <em>&ldquo;network[s] of institutions in the public and private sectors whose activities and interactions initiate, import, modify and diffuse new technologies.&rdquo;<\/em> As such they feed entrepreneurial ecosystems too &ndash;&nbsp;just think about the government-driven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZTC_RxWN_xo\">history of Silicon Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>National Level Examples: Japan&rsquo;s national innovation system (1970s), UK&rsquo;s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (2011)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business Ecosystem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&ldquo;[Companies co-evolving] capabilities around a new innovation: they work cooperatively and competitively to support new products, satisfy customer needs, and eventually incorporate the next round of innovations<\/em> <em><span class=\"zp-InText-zp-ID--2420821-ZSECSR7L--wp814 zp-InText-Citation loading\" rel=\"{ 'pages': '75', 'items': '{2420821:ZSECSR7L}', 'format': '(%a%, %d%, %p%)', 'brackets': '', 'etal': '', 'separator': '', 'and': '' }\"><\/span>.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Examples: &lsquo;marketplaces&rsquo;+ like Amazon or Alibaba; IT <a href=\"https:\/\/codify.in\/de\/glossary\/platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"A platform is a set of solutions to problems that is made available to the members of an ecosystem through a set of access points or interfaces.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">platform<\/a> systems like <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/janschmiedgen\/business-ecosystem-design\"><em>Apple<\/em><\/a><em>, SAP, or Android; hospitality platforms like AirBnB or Open Table; ride hailing like Uber or Lyft; freelance labor like Fiverr; financial transaction platforms like PayPal or Klarna; etc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Product-Service Ecosystem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The (often unrelated) products and services a user combines when trying to get a job done in contexts where no institutionalized solution yet exists.
